This is actually my all-time top post. I wrote it in February, with a simple premise: you experience insanity at your big organization because they are all crazy. You must succeed anyway.
During the Copyblogger Authority conference, I listened to a presentation given by a man that I admire greatly, Darren Rowse. Darren is a great combination of persistent, compassionate, and passionate. His advice on how to do remarkable work is awesome. (As an aside, I can’t find any of my photos from Copyblogger, was very grateful that my friend Geoff, who is a great photographer, took a great shot of Darren.)
Nobody trusts you to do cool stuff if you don’t have your act together. This is a summary of my advice that I gave at a talk at Interop.
Oh, look! A technology posting in the top 5! Except, it’s not really about technology. It’s about not blaming technology for a lack of employee or peer engagement in the workplace.
In our factory-like modern work environments, there’s an erroneous assumption that we cannot display affection of any kind. But if we want employees to stick around, we’re not going to treat them like cogs in a factory; we’re going to connect. We’re going to have meaningful relationships and do meaningful work.
I was tickled that #4 and #5 even made it on the list, given that they were only posted a few weeks ago.
